Gall Bladder Surgery

You may be a candidate for gallbladder surgery if you have been diagnosed with symptomatic gallstones, recurrent biliary colic, acute or chronic cholecystitis, or gallstone pancreatitis. Symptoms often include right upper abdominal pain particularly after fatty meals, nausea, bloating, and fever. Diagnosis is typically confirmed by ultrasound. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is performed under general anaesthesia. Four small keyhole incisions are made in the abdomen; carbon dioxide gas is used to create working space, and the gallbladder is removed through one of the ports. The procedure typically takes 45–90 minutes. Most patients are discharged the same day or after one night in hospital

Pre-operative: Fast from midnight (or as instructed). Cease blood-thinning medications as directed. Arrange transport home and support for the first 24 hours post-surgery. Post-operative: Avoid heavy lifting for 2–4 weeks. A low-fat diet is recommended during the initial recovery period. Some patients experience loose stools for several weeks — this is normal. Return to work is typically within 1–2 weeks for desk-based roles. Attend all follow-up appointments
