Inflammatory Conditions (Hidradenitis)

If you have been diagnosed with or suspect you have hidradenitis suppurativa — particularly moderate to severe disease that has not responded to antibiotics or medical management — you may benefit from surgical consultation with Dr George. Surgery is considered when there are persistent abscesses, sinus tracts, or scarring that impair quality of life or daily function

Surgical management of HS may include incision and drainage of acute abscesses, deroofing of sinus tracts (unroofing), or wide local excision of affected areas followed by closure or skin grafting. The approach depends on disease severity and anatomical location. Procedures are performed under local or general anaesthesia. Medical management strategies, including biologics, are also discussed at consultation

Pre-operative: Optimise skin hygiene in affected areas. Cease smoking where possible. Inform Dr George of all current medications. Maintain a healthy weight to reduce skin fold friction. Post-operative: Wound care is critical — dressings will be required and changed regularly. Avoid tight clothing in the affected area. Attend all follow-up appointments. HS is a chronic condition; ongoing medical management alongside surgery is often required
