Pilonidal Surgery

You are a candidate for pilonidal surgery if you have a confirmed pilonidal abscess, chronically infected sinus, or recurrent disease following previous drainage. Those with persistent pain, discharge, or recurrence after conservative treatment should seek surgical review. Dr George will assess your anatomy and disease extent to recommend the most appropriate procedure.

For acute abscesses, incision and drainage under local anaesthesia provides immediate relief. Definitive surgical treatment involves excision of the sinus tracts. Several techniques exist including excision with primary closure, open wound healing, or flap reconstruction (e.g., Karydakis or Limberg flap). The choice depends on disease extent and patient factors, and will be discussed at consultation

Pre-operative: Shave or depilate the affected area as instructed. Cease blood-thinning medications as directed. Arrange post-operative support if general anaesthesia is planned. Post-operative: Wound hygiene is essential — keep the area clean and dry. Avoid prolonged sitting on hard surfaces in the initial recovery period. Hair removal of the natal cleft is recommended long-term to prevent recurrence. Attend all follow-up wound checks
