Skin Cancer and Melanoma

Anyone who has had a suspicious skin lesion identified by their GP or dermatologist, or who has a confirmed diagnosis of BCC, SCC, or melanoma, should be referred to Dr George for surgical assessment. Patients with a personal or family history of melanoma, significant sun damage, or immunosuppression are at higher risk and should be regularly monitored

Management depends on the type, size, location, and stage of the skin cancer. Surgical excision with appropriate margins is the mainstay of treatment. For melanoma, wide local excision and sentinel lymph node biopsy may be indicated. Complex cases may require skin flap or graft reconstruction. Mohs-micrographic techniques may be employed for high-risk facial lesions. All excised tissue is sent for histopathological analysis

Pre-operative: Provide all prior biopsy reports and imaging. A referral from your GP or dermatologist is typically required for Medicare rebates. Arrange someone to drive you home if sedation or general anaesthesia is used. Post-operative: Keep wounds clean and dry. Attend all follow-up appointments for wound review and pathology results. A surveillance plan will be established for ongoing skin checks. Strict sun protection (SPF 50+, protective clothing, hats) is essential for life
