Soft Tissue Tumours

If you have a soft tissue lump that is growing, painful, deep to the skin, firm, or larger than 5 cm, prompt surgical assessment is recommended. Any lesion that returns after previous excision also warrants specialist review. While most lumps are benign, specialist evaluation ensures that sinister pathology is not missed

Assessment involves clinical examination, imaging (ultrasound, MRI, CT), and sometimes a biopsy to establish the diagnosis prior to definitive surgery. Surgical excision is performed with appropriate margins based on the nature of the tumour. For suspected or confirmed sarcoma, surgery is planned within a multidisciplinary team framework involving oncology and radiology. Reconstruction is planned as part of the surgical approach when indicated

Pre-operative: Bring all prior imaging and biopsy results to consultation. Avoid biopsy at non-specialist centres for suspected sarcoma — inappropriate initial surgery can compromise definitive treatment. Post-operative: Wound care and activity restrictions will be specific to the site and extent of surgery. Attend all pathology follow-up appointments. Oncology follow-up arranged as appropriate
